INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP TO ANALYZE THE YASUNI-ITT ECONOMIC MODEL

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Integration reported that prestigious academics and experts, of both national and international prestige, will meet in the Amphitheater of FLACSO between the 26th and 28th of November for a Workshop-Meeting regarding the Yasuní ITT Initiative, with the intention of analyzing the opportunities of a new model of development.

The workshop is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Integration, the Vice President of the Republic, the Simón Bolívar Andean Univeristy and the NGOs Earth Economics and World Resources Institute.

The opening seminar will be Monday, the 26th of November at 8:30 am, which will be delivered by Vice President Lenin Moreno. Furthermore, Mr. Moreno will present Chancellor María Fernanda Espinosa.

The Yasuní ITT economic model, proposed by the Ecuadorian government, promotes keeping the oil under the earth, en the eastern section of the Yasuní-Campo ITT (Ishpingo, Tambococha, Tiputini) National Park. This initiative avoids the release of large quantities of CO2 to the atmosphere and contributes to climate stability.

The proposal calls for an international community to assume greater commitments of support to innovative projects, such as Ecuador’s, which has the advantage of presenting an integral conservation project in one of the most sensitive and rich areas of the planet. The objective of the workshop is to study in-depth the Yasuní-ITT model as an initiative that will permit Ecuador to lay the foundation for a small-scale energy transition. In addition, national and international theorists and academics will meet to formulate a new model of sustainable development.

In the workshop the following aspects will be discussed:

  • The Ecological Footprint of Ecuador
  • The Carbon Neutral proposal
  • The opportunities that the Yasuní-ITT model offers for developing countries in the Post- Kyoto framework
